New Stretch of Torrence Creek Greenway Opens in Huntersville

Huntersville’s newest outdoor attraction is a 0.9-mile extension of the Torrence Creek Greenway, expanding the popular trail to nearly three miles.

This $5.6 million project, completed in partnership between Mecklenburg County and the Town of Huntersville, aims to link neighborhoods divided by Interstate 77 while providing more scenic spaces for locals and visitors.

A highlight of this extension is a striking 300-foot tunnel beneath I-77, featuring the luminous "State of Flow" installation by Project One Studio.

This artwork, developed with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the Arts and Science Council, decorates the tunnel with abstract designs inspired by local streams.

Plans are underway to connect the greenway to McDowell Creek Greenway and The Vine, broadening Huntersville’s trail network.

Parking is available at Huntersville Gateway Park and Ride and Rosedale Nature Park.

Enjoy a seamless and artful walk through Huntersville’s revitalized green spaces.

Historic Huntersville School Continues to Serve Community a Century Later

In the heart of Huntersville's historic Pottstown neighborhood, the Torrence-Lytle Community Center stands as a vibrant symbol of local resilience.

Originally opened as the Huntersville Colored High School in 1925, it provided vital education for African American students when such opportunities were rare.

For over three decades, the school influenced generations, its architecture and spirit reflecting the community’s dedication to progress.

Following the pivotal Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the school closed in 1966 but soon found new life, thanks to the Huntersville Better Community Civic Organization.

Today, the center hosts events from church gatherings to weddings, carrying forward its legacy.

As the building nears its 100th anniversary, neighbors will celebrate with a special event, honoring alumni, unveiling a historic marker, and reflecting on its enduring impact.

Restoration efforts for the beloved Waymer Center gym show the community’s commitment to preserving Pottstown’s history and spirit for future generations.
